Derrames

In Portuguese, the word Derrames means that something is being spilled or is leaking. It can also be translated as a stroke, alluding to the blockage of blood in the arteries. This series began when Ilka Lemos saw the news that young girls from the outskirts of São Paulo, Brazil, had stopped attending school due to poor menstrual hygiene conditions. A brutal reality mobilized the artist to focus on a suffering that exceeds the issue, making her produce in the face of a common subject: violence and pain. The pieces, made with crochet knots and tulle, are torn flesh and open wounds. They are a vertical and suspended composition. The artwork drips from the ceiling, often leaking onto the floor.
